CAUSES OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS

The exact cause of plantar fasciitis can be different between pateints. The most common cause is biomechanical stress of the plantar fascia.

ANATOMY

The plantar fasciais a thick connective tissue band that supports the arch of the foot. It runs from the middle part of the heel bone to the metatarsal bones near the end of the foot. The red area above can indicate where inflammation can collect and cause pain. This part of the foot can be very painful when walking or getting up in the morning.

Treating plantar fascia with strengthening exercises can be confusing. This is because the plantar fascia is not a muscle…How do we strengthen connective tissue? We will review some common exercises. These are to “build resilience” of the plantar fascia. Applying load through the fascia is a good way to reduce irritability of the tissue and increase tolerance to load!

HEEL RAISES

These are an effective way to apply good “stress” to the plantar fascia. These exercises are also improve circulation of the lower limb.

ORTHOTICS

Orthotics are one of the most common treatments prescirbed. They can enhance the mechanical control of the foot and ankle. Sometimes, insoles are another good option for shock absorption. Research indicates that this is not the cure for this condition. It can help with symptoms and is very helpful for patients with biomechanics issues. It is not for everyone.

INJECTIONS

Injections can be helpful in relieving pain in stubborn cases. Sometimes, one or two injections is enough to allow the body to heal from the injury. The injection, usually cortisone, can stop the inflammation and reduce pain. This may allow the body to compensate less and start to build strength and recover.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

A very effective modality is shockwave therapy. Research indicated up to 90 percent success rate. Shockwave uses a strong and fast sound wave to promote regeneration of tissue. It is able to reduce inflammation and pain as well.
